Northern BC Connects to the World at Light Speed
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - This week BCNET announces the installation and delivery of its upgrade to its super broadband network connecting the Prince George and Vancouver Transit Exchange locations. As of July 20, 2008, the network operations teams on two ends of the province have been successfully running the new services. This next generation research network link provisioned by Shaw Business Solutions connects northern British Columbia to the world. BCNET Broadband Innovation Challenge Winners Announced
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - BCNET honoured BC's best and brightest computing students last week in an awards ceremony for the BCNET Broadband Innovation Challenge. The annual Broadband Innovation Challenge seeks applications from students who have developed computer applications that utilize super-broadband networks, like the network that BCNET operates provincially. In addition to a combined $10,000 in prize money, the winning competitors in the challenge walk away with an extra boost of confidence to pursue their career goals. Read More.

BC is an Eduroam Hotspot: BCNET Brings the Roaming Scholar Home
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -  Is remembering several different usernames and passwords when travelling to another institution to connect to the Internet getting confusing? Finally, eduroam has come to the rescue and getting connected to the Internet has become easier. Gone are the days of having to remember different usernames and passwords when travelling to another campus or institution for a conference, seminar or meeting. BCNET is pleased to announce that eduroam (education roaming) is now live and enabled at higher education institutions across British Columbia. Read more.

BCNET Announces New Client Services Manager
Vancouver, BC - BCNET is pleased to announce the promotion of Clarence Lee as Manager of Client Services. In his new role, Clarence will be actively engaged in increasing the provincial research and education community's use of and connectivity to BC’s new 10 gigabit per second mega-speed optical lightpath network. He will oversee all BCNET member needs pertaining to the use advanced networks and he will encourage local communities to peer with research and education members at BCNET’s five transit exchanges (Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George). Fast Forward: The Future of High-Speed networks
Imagine Downloading 72 full length movies in 2 seconds flat...

Vancouver, BC - On March 17, 2008 BCNET together with the Province of BC and CANARIE announced that British Columbia now has access to one of the world's most advanced optical light path "Internet" networks at a launch in downtown Vancouver. The network upgrade provides universities and researchers in BC with access to 10 gigabits per second bandwidth over 72 optical wavelengths. The mega-speed network when fully harnessed would enable one to download 72 feature length films in two seconds flat or transfer one full hard ddrive of 60 gigabits from Vancouver to Seattle in 48 seconds to potentially 72 people at once. BCNET Upgrades Northern BC's Networking Technology
Vancouver, BC - BCNET announces today its plans to upgrade the next generation research network that connects northern British Columbia to the world. BCNET currently maintains a 2 gigabits per second (gbps) super broadband network that serves higher education and research in Prince George. This link is to be upgraded by early 2008 to an impressive 10 gbps, which will provide data transfer rates equivalent to downloading 250 high-quality songs in one second or a full-length motion picture in about 2 seconds.

BCNET Announces New Staff
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - BCNET is pleased to announce the addition of several new staff members to its team. Joining the team are Naila Wazir and Jeanette Lum. Naila Wazir is the new Executive Assistant for Michael Hrybyk and Jeanette Lum is the new Manager of Communications and Client Services.

In addition, a new Network Analyst, Andree Toonk and two new communications co-op students, Deanne Beattie and Carlie Thauvette from SFU, have joined the team.

BCNET Hosts Gala Event to Inaugurate Kelowna’s Connectivity to a World-Wide Research Network
Dr. Richard Tees, acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, UBCO led a celebration today to announce Kelowna’s connection to BCNET, a “super” broadband global research network that runs at 10,000 times the speed of the commercial Internet. These “super” high-speed, high-bandwidth global connections via BCNET will greatly expand the Okanagan higher education community’s capacity for research and collaboration.

BCNET Hosts BC’s Minister of Advanced Education and BC’s University Presidents for BCNET 2010: Celebrating BC’s Connections to the World
B.C. Minister of Advanced Education Murray Coell led a celebration today to mark the first major extension of BCNET, a “super” broadband research network that runs at 10,000 times the speed of the commercial internet. The expansion – part of a $3.15-million provincially funded project called BCNET 2010–extended the benefits of B.C.’s optical-regional advanced network (ORAN) to educational and research institutions in Kelowna, Kamloops and to the Surrey campus of SFU, where today’s celebration was held.
